Since the beginning of the human race marriage has existed. Some marriages have been arranged. The parents chose the perfect match for their son or daughter. Other marriages were formed when the desired woman was captured. Women have also been purchased for the purpose of marrying a specific man. Then there are marriages where two people desire to marry each other and form a mutual agreement to be each others partner.

Historically, marriages have not always been organized into a religious or holy acts and ceremonies. Though some marriages are thought of as a bonding relationship created by God, others are, as mentioned, pre-arranged.

In some marriages the value of new life for both the bride and the groom creates the most extraordinary time of their lives, and a very special landmark in both partners’ families’ lives as well. Both family units will receive a new member into their fold. It’s a time of fresh love and new identification. The wife has a husband, the husband has a wife, the mother-in-laws and father-in-laws have a new daughter-in-law and son-in-law. The family has grown. It’s the beginning of a brand new path in each member’s life experience.

Joy, adventure, responsibility, and trust spring forth in the partner-relationship. These adjectives have frequently surfaced to describe marriage. The process linked to marriage is a relationship that grows in intimacy. Friendship leads to engagement to be married, and the engagement leads to setting a wedding day.

Often the bride’s and groom’s families and friends join the beautiful couple to share in their celebration of making a new life together. Gift-giving and a party with music and food are frequently a very important part of the occasion. The attendees’ hearts fill with glee as they shake hands with the new couple.

After the wedding the couple frequently go on a trip, often called a honeymoon, to enjoy the splendor of each others company.

Marriage does not always mean a male and female relationship. Sometimes same-sex marriages occur between people that choose to partner with each other.

There are also marriages that involve the coming together of more than two individuals that choose to bond with each other and love one another.

Some people choose to not participate in a legal agreement. Instead they choose to commit to sharing life together without a marriage license.

Marriage is a significant part of life. We are social beings with social needs and social choices. Marriage is coming together.
