Johnny Appleseed's Birthday

© Charlotte Spell

Johnny Appleseed was born as John Chapman on September 26, 1774. For a lovely story about his life follow the link to the web site called, Welcome to the Johnny Appleseed Trail of North Central Masschuetts. There you will find the story it is called, "John Chapman-A Gentle Hero."

John was known as not only a nuseryman who planted apple seeds but as a father of ten children, a husband and a christian. Since he helped to spread the planting of apple trees throughout the midwest, apples have become a part of many different recipes. I have included several links to sites which have different recipes for apple pies, apple cakes, apple muffins, apple cider and wine, apple salads.

Canning apples is also included in the websites listed. Making homemade apple juice, applesauce, applebutter, apple jellies and jams, sliced apple rings. Preparing and using syrups, along with freezing apples.

Many bed and breakfast inns use recipes that include apples. They are also great for any holiday. They come in a variety of colors, yellow, green and red. They can even be used in garishes and salsas. Candy apples and apple cider are great treats for the kids on a cold autumn evening. I hope you will try some of these wonderful recipes. I know that I will and enjoy celebrating and remembering Johnny Appleseed on his birthday.
