The Day Daddy Made Green Eggs & Ham

© Charlotte Spell

When I think of the holiday Saint Patrick’s day (March 17th) it always brings back a memory of my Dad. One Saint Patrick’s day morning, when I went to the breakfast table there were green eggs on my plate next to a piece of ham. They looked gross but I started laughing cause I knew my dad had to have read one of our children's books called "Green Eggs and Ham," to have gotten that idea. That was the kind of Father that my Dad was. He was always trying to show us kids he cared. Whether it was by showing us how to play baseball or coaching one of the teams. He was always there for us. He is now seventy years old and he has six children, 19 grandchidren and 9 great-grandchildren. He isn't coaching anymore but he still helps out from time to time with the baseball field near my parents house where I grew up.

Saint Patrick’s day began a long time ago in Ireland. Part of my family came from Ireland and I have a lot of family and friends that like to celebrate Saint Patrick’s day. We always wear green on Saint Patrick’s day or we will get pinched. Some of my friends drink green beer on Saint Patrick’s day. My oldest sister Carol was always the one coming home with a four leaf clover she was also usually the one doing the pinching. I have heard that Saint Patrick told the story of the trinity with a three leaf clover, showing the connection between the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit, three in one.

I don’t know if it’s true but Saint Patrick was said to have driven all the snakes out of Ireland with one of his sermons. I wonder if he was that holy or if the tales were just a lot of blarney. I do know that he was accredited for converting Ireland to Christianity. It isn't every day that one becomes a Saint so I figure he must have been a very special person.

I have included several links to web pages that have recipes for an Irish Saint Patrick’s day dinner (minus the green eggs and ham) and clipart, more history of this holiday and loads of fun for preschoolers.
