President's Day In The United States


From the time I was a small child in kindergarten I was taught about patriotism. When we said the pledge to the flag I stood proudly and placed my hand over my heart. Saying the words 'one nation under God' gave me a sense of pride. When I grew older my life was touched when President John F. Kennedy was assignated on a day when I was already celebrating my birthday. Vietnam changed my views some on life but it did not change the fact that I believed in freedom for all mankind.

During my lifetime I have seen one President assignated, an attempt made on another President's life. One President impeached and an attempt to impeach yet another President for personal indiscretions. Some President's were in favor of war and others seemed against it. I lived through a recession and yet felt untouched by it. My Mother on the other hand and my Grandparents lives were touched by the depression and perhaps my Mothers stories about the depression were what made me so appreciative of those things that I have been blessed with in my lifetime.

I was also told about "Honest Abe," Abraham Lincoln, how he lived in a log cabin and then how he was assignated at the theater. Each President it seemed had his own story.
