The legend of Valentines Day was about a priest with the surname Valentine that helped young lovers to be married during a time of war when he was forbidden to do so. The priest was later put to death. Then years later his day was memorialized and eventually became Valentines Day. He too became known as Saint Valentine.
On this day lovers both young and old through out the world exchange tokens of their affection. My granddaughter Desiree' (7) gives out Valentines to her classmates. This tradition brings back many memories of my childhood. When my four sisters and I were in elementry school we gave out small valentines at school. Also, of candy hearts with saying on them and as we grew older, big red heart shaped boxes filled with chocolates from our boyfriends. Beautiful Valentines Day cards that grew larger as we grew up.
Always, my Mother would make Valentines Day special and we would get suprises on valentines. Everything from red cinnamon candies to small gifts, like coloring books and crayons or playdough or watercolors. My Mother and I still exchange Valentines Day cards because love is not just for lovers it for anyone in our lives that we want to share our love with.
My husband Robert and our son Sam (20) are both chefs and they are passing on their knowledge of cooking to the rest of the children in the family. So there will be some special baking for Valentines this year. I have included a couple sites below where readers can find recipes for Valentines. Our son's Kristofer (12) and Stefan (11) were in the kitchen just before Christmas helping Robert make some reindeer cookies. Our son Sam's, daughter, Kristin (2), got a magic chef kitchen for Christmas and it was her favorite gift. She was talking on her pretend phone and looking at her talking cookbook and playing as if she was baking cookies. She is well on her way to becoming a chef just like Dad! While, Patricia's(23) son JonPaul (20 mos.) was busy playing his new toy saxaphone. He is the musician in the family.
