Mother of Many ChildrenMy son Terry who is now twenty-five went to Wyoming a few years back with a girlfriend. In one of his letters he referred to me as the "Mother of Many Children." It seems I have two favorite things that go hand in hand and they are children and holidays. This article is about adoption and those families lucky enough to be parents by choice. I have four children of my own and three stepsons. I also was a foster parent for three years to a beautiful little boy named Joseph. Since most of my children are now grown, my husband and I now are looking into the possibility of adopting a child. I believe with all my heart that no child needs to be abandoned or left in garbage can and that all children have enormous worth. Years ago I watched this movie called “Don’t Cry It’s Only Thunder.” It was about an orphanage in a country overseas that was involved in a war. I was affected by it because I have heard for years about orphans that didn’t have a place to live and the parents were either absent because like in the movie they had been killed or because of addictions, poverty or they were too young to except the responsibility of raising an infant. All the years of my youth I feel that I was blessed because I had parents that loved me. Every holiday we celebrated as a family. I felt so bad for those children who didn’t have a mother and father and grandparents to share special days with. Then I heard about the co-workers of Mother Teresa. So for several years I worked with children that were from homes where there were single parents raising them or they were at risk of being in gangs or hooked on drugs. All of the children that joined that group are all grown now. They all have families and are drug free. One of the young men, Tony, is now a minister. He was one of the ones that had the most problems as a child and was in the most difficult of situations. Missy is married and has two children and she is now an RN. Each child had a different story but each child knew that they were important. They worked at the city soup kitchen and they were shown that they had choices in their lives and that they had a way out of the poverty and the violence and drugs.
