After witnessing the massacre, Ahab raced home to inform his wife. Jezebel flew into a rage. She sent word to Elijah, swearing she would kill him. The tyranny and fear she emitted was so great that Elijah fled miles beyond Israel's borders and prayed for his death.

Later, Ahab decided he wanted to expand his estate. He met with a peasant, Naboth, whose vineyard he wished to purchase. Naboth refused the offer sending Ahab, insulted and jealous, into a tantrum where he refused to eat. After deciding that she needed to teach Ahab how a real king would act, Jezebel forged letters with his name and seal and sent them to the elders of Jezreel. The elders were ordered to call an assembly where two scoundrels would charge Naboth with blasphemy and treason. Either out of loyalty or fear, the assembly was held, Naboth was charged, and he was stoned to death. His children were also murdered, eliminating any other claims on the land. Ahab quickly annexed the vineyard.

In 853 BC, Ahab died in battle when an arrow, shot randomly into the body of his troops, struck the king between the sections of his armor where there was no protection. His eldest son, Ahaziah assumed the throne for a brief period until he too died from injuries aquired when he fell through the lattice of his room. With no heirs in Ahaziah's line, the throne went to his brother, Jehoram.

During Jehoram's rule, Elijah's successor, Elisha, was sent by the Lord to anoint a man named Jehu the King of Israel. Jehu immediately left for Jezreel to murder Jezebel and establish his throne. He was met by Jehoram on the same plot of land the once belonged to Naboth. Jehu shot an arrow between Jehoram's shoulders, which pierced his heart and killed him.

Her fate determined by the God that she spent a lifetime fighting, Jezebel decided to face her predator. She made up her face, styled her hair, and waited at a window. When Jehu arrived, she taunted him. Jehu called for three eunuchs to throw Jezebel down to the street. Her body tumbled to the ground, her blood splattering on the palace wall. Jehu then trampled her body with his horses and chariot. When servants came back to bury the Queen, all that was left of her body were the skull, feet and palms of the hands, thus fulfilling the prophecy of Elijah.
