However, Adams's regard for Native Americans was not so gallant. His peculiarity about race led him to defend the genocide of Native Americans. He agreed with Andrew Jackson and his execution of prisoners in 1819. He believed that Native Americans, for the most part, could not be "civilized." In the early 1840s, however, Adams about-faced and condemned Andrew Jackson's 'use of "fraudulent treaties and brutal force.'"
