Judo and the Olympicsyuko - Awarded when two of the required elements are missing. The most common reason is when the opponent falls on their side. kοka - Awarded when three of the elements are missing. Examples may be the opponent falls on their shoulder or leg. An Ippon is also awarded when an athlete applies a technique and is able to hold their opponent to the ground for 25 sec. The referee calls the beginning and the end of the countdown. Waza-ari is awarded for more than 20, but less than 25 seconds, Yuko when it is more than 15 but under 20 seconds, Koka for 10 to 14 seconds. An Ippon is also awarded to an participant who applies a strangling or joint technique and forces the opponent to give up by tapping out or saying maitta (I give up).
