The 42nd Annual Grammy Nominations (2000)

The Grammy nominations have been released, and the History of Rock, in an effort to put rock in a more modern state of mind, will look at the "rock" categories, and the terrible injustices within. Well, okay, it's not as bad as it seemed when I first picked it up, put I have to point out that with Matthew Good Band, Barenaked Ladies, Our Lady Peace and many, many more releasing high quality albums, there is an astounding lack of Canadian content, such as 0 nominations. Oh well. For interest, the 42nd Annual Grammies will be held February 23rd, and we will have a follow-up article the week afterwards with the results. Basically, I'm including here any major category with the word "rock". No dance, no rap, no R&B (although isn't it nice that Wilson Pickett, Smokey Robinson and Barry White are still up for Grammies??). With that in mind, here we go.

Album of the Year: I've already broken my rule about the words, but I had to use this to point out that 30 years later, Carlos Santana is still going strong. He's up for best album with Supernatural, which I think is far better than the other nominees [Millennium, Backstreet Boys (oh God no!); Fly, Dixie Chicks (don't start me on country!); When I Look In Your Eyes, Diana Krall (I actually wouldn't mind if she won because she's Canadian and her music is decent) and Fanmail, TLC (I haven't liked anything of theirs since Waterfalls).

Record/Song of the Year: Again, note the absence of any of the words, but it was too tempting. "Smooth" by Santana, from the aforementioned album is up, but I wouldn't give it, as good as it is, the best ever. Who should win: Record of the Year: I have no idea. All the nominees ("I Want It That Way", "Believe", "Livin' La Vida Loca" and "No Scrubs") aside from "Smooth" all make me sick to my stomach, so I'd just like to say: Anyone but the Backstreet Boys! Who will win: Backstreet Boys, "I Want It That Way". Song of the Year: This goes to the song writers, so I have to go on originality and creativity instead of personal opinion. That already rules out the Backstreet Boys, who have only mass-produced their songs with the exact same format as 'N Sync and other boy groups since their debut. "Livin' La Vida Loca", as much as I wish I could have it permanently removed from my brain, is a success if only because it opened the Latin music markets up to the mainstream again. "Smooth", as much as I love it, is nothing special in this department, since song writers don't write guitar solos, and "Unpretty" was, quite possibly, the most disturbing video I have ever seen. So my hopes go for Canadian fave Shania Twain, if only because anyone who has had to suffer through living in Timmins should win.
