SPECIAL---The Anthrax Scare

The media. Microsoft. The Democratic Senate Majority Leader. Are these not ideal targets for the American extremist right wing? After the bombing of the Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City, a significant number of Americans—perhaps even a majority—assumed at once that Mideastern terrorists must be responsible. It was only Tim McVeigh’s bad driving that cracked the case.

Maybe I’m wrong. Maybe al-Qaeda is responsible. Please believe me when I say that I’d feel no smug satisfaction from being correct about this. One man has died, several have been infected, including a seven-month old baby. My country is frightened. It matters not one whit to me who has initiated these attacks—what matters is stopping them. But if my hunch proves correct…if the anthrax attacks have been sponsored by home-grown terrorists, then they can continue their crimes against their fellow Americans while the nation’s attention and suspicion is cast elsewhere. And that is the most frightening possibility of all.
