The Israeli Air Force

Syrian anti-aircraft sites and 29 MiG-21s and MiG-23s with minimal IAF losses. This war saw the first service of the Israeli-built Kfir jet fighter. (With thanks to Rick Francona, Middle East Politics http://www.suite101.com/welcome.cfm/midd... )

*Operation Tunis, 1 October, 1985. The IAF once more proved its long reach against its terrorist enemies. IAF fighter-bombers, utilizing mid-air refueling, struck the PLO headquarters in Hamam-a-Shatt, Tunisia. Arafat's headquarters was destroyed, with no challenge from Tunisian forces. It was within a few years of this attack that the PLO began to negotiate with Israel.

A relative peace has descended over much of the Middle East, but this has not affected the IAF's operational readiness. The politics of the region turn on a dime, and the front line of Israeli defense stands as ready as ever to defend its tiny homeland.
