Celebrate Earth Day 2000!

There are a number of good book series that deal more with specific environment issues and leaders. The Our Endangered Planet Series from Lerner Publications has individual titles such as Antarctica, Groundwater, , Oceans, Population Growth, Rivers and Lakes, and the Tropical Rain Forest. (Grade 5+)

The Save Our Earth Series from Gloucester Press is aimed at younger readers and includes titles on Acid Rain, The Greenhouse Effect, TheOzone Layer, and Rainforest Destruction. (Grade 3+)

An excellent biography series focusing on key figures in the environmental movement is Earth Keepers from Twenty-First Century Books. Right now the series includes biographies on David Brower, Rachel Carson, George Washingtonn Carver, Jacques Cousteau, Marjory Stoneman Douglas, Chico Mendes, John Muir, Gaylord Nelson, and Theodore Roosevelt. (Grade 4+)

Teaching Resources

From Enviromental Education comes a number of different links to resources and activities for classroom use that were used for Earth Day 1999, but may give teachers and parents some ideas for this year too. Included are articles, activities, projects, and educational sites. Other activities to more specific environmental issues such as pollution, endangered species, energy and other concerns are just a click away in their ready-to-use index.

The United States Environmental Proctection Agency has put together an extensive and well-done Teacher's Guide from its Environmental Education Center, featuring lesson plans, resources, and additional contacts and links. There is also a separate guide for student use too.

All Species Project has a number of activities and projects, including an "All Species Parade," and plays for Earth Day. A terrific site to visit.

The Wilderness Society has provided their own suggested links to a number of classroom activities, downloads, and other resources that promote Earth Day 2000 as well as general information on the environment. For grades pre-K-12. This is another great site.

Other Activities and Ideas

DLTK's Earth Day Crafts has a number of activities geared towards smaller children, ages 2+.

Kid's Domain features a great Earth Day Page filled with games, activities, stories, songs, coloring pages, and cards to send. For kids ages 2-12.

Another site from the United States EPA is the Explorer's Club which features an Art Room, Science Room, and Game Room and looks at a number of topics on the environment such as plants and animals, garbage and recycling, and what kids can do to help out. For ages 5-12.
