The film is then used to print a copy of the pages on light-sensitive paper. Once this printout has been proofed one last time for any major production errors, the book is run on the presses. From there the book is bound (or glued) together, the dust jacket is placed on the book, and the books are packaged up for shipment.

Technological advances are occurring every day in the printing industry. Companies are starting to switch from film to digital proofs, which are more cost-effective, durable, and environmentally responsible. Who knows what the future has in store for printing, but new technologies are introduced every day to make the process easier and more cost effective.

And now you know how a manuscript becomes a book. I hope you’ve enjoyed this little trip through the publishing world. Next time I’ll be giving some pointers about writing Historical Fiction, which has become increasingly popular in the last few decades.
