Me: I'm an author writing about the pulley system at Monticello. Do you think that you'd enjoy reading my article once I'm finished?

Waiter: Umm... yeah. That sounds...er... interesting. Would you like more coffee?

Ah hah again! My topic is too narrow or doesn't hold their interest. This person really doesn't care about my topic and is just trying to say something to get me to shut up.

Half of writing for publication is picking a topic that your audience will like. The other half is finding an audience that will like your topic.

But the writer's audience is a completely different topic . . .
