July 4 - Day of Intention

Not everyone was happy with the king's decision. In an unfinished painting by Benjamin West (who later became the official portrait artist to the King of England) commemorating the signing of the treaty, two British representatives (Richard Oswald and Caleb Whitefoord) refused to pose for the portrait because they were "humiliated" that England acquiesced to the United States. British troops finally withdrew from New York on November 25, 1783.

So enjoy the fireworks on July 4, but save a sparkler or two for September 3, the true Independence Day!
