The most widely held explanation of Troy's fall is that a real war did take place around 1250 BC, but not over the beauty of a woman. Rather, experts feel that because Troy controlled a key sailing route between the Aegean and Black Seas, it was a very wealthy civilization. This alone would make Troy the target of attacks from rival city-states.

Archaeologists have uncovered the existence of approximately 8 different Troys, each built atop the one before. Charred stones indicate the burning of the city, and many urns and other pieces of pottery, some still containing their original holdings of grain and beans, have been recovered. Paintings on some of the intact vases and jugs tell the story of various events of Troy. The discoveries made at Troy are considered to be among the most famous in the world.
