Santa Monica is an 8-square mile city within the city of Los Angeles wedged beteen Malibu and Venice. It's the place the 'A' list calls home.
Aside from the omnipresent sunshine, the beach and Promenade offer all the entertainment you may need. Along the beachfront, locals rollerblade, cycle or stroll while bodybuilders do their thing under the admiring gaze of passers by. It's the epitomy of relaxed cool. There's a sense of freedom in the air. The "People's Republic" as the locals call it, certainly has that laid back resort feel to it. This is probably the hippest cosy beachside community, where even the stars are just ordinary people. The weather is great all year round. Mild and balmy, the climate is humidity free and benefits from the refreshing ocean breeze which means you won't feel oppressed by the strong Californian sun, so remember the sunscreen. The coldest it gets is 13C but January has been known to have 20C days! On average, a year, Santa Monica sees 343 days of sunshine. For beach access and great views stay at Shutters on the beach. The marine-themed hotel is a favourite with celebrities and is located on the beach. The rooms are gorgeous. Tastefully decorated, everything has been customized down to the starfish phones. It's all about discreet service, friendly staff, great food and amazing ocean views. Shutters is a celebrity hideaway and won't betray their celeb clients' trust. But, if it's good enough for John Travolta, it's good enough for us. The Fairmont is also a good choice with great ocean views and a celebrity client list that goes on for ever... from Greta Garbo to Bill Clinton! Santa Monica is riddled with restaurants who cater for the rich and famous. Try One Pico: the elegant dining room with its ocean views is the pefect place to sample seafood. Damien, the Australian manager will make a fuss of you and make you feel like royalty. Across the street at Casa Del Mar there is more top notch food to be had in the grand 1920's style opulent Oceanfront Restaurant. In town, on the Promenade, Lago is a delicious Tuscan restaurant that is becoming a regular celebrity Friday night hangout. The food is glorious with season-themed menus and you can be sure the produce is fresh and tasty. Amongst others Goldie Hawn, Michelle Pfeiffer and Jerry Bruckheimer have eaten here, while Pierce Brosnan arrived and was told he'd sample the best Mojito in town here. A familiar line for him?
