However, as a short term visitor, it is clear that if you stick to the inside of the island as opposed to the coast you are guaranteed a far more genuine and, in my opinion, more pleasant experience. Our hotel near Manacor, The Hotel Son Amoixa, a 500 year-old finca was a delight.
The old finca, set in the vineyards on the hill had a fantastic view, an aura of calm and grace and regular visits from the local shepherd and his herd. The hotel also offers a gym, a spa including a beauty therapists' services such as manicures and massages and a tennis court. As for shopping on the island, Manacor is famed for it's pearls. Throughout the island you'll find leather factory outlets and also a lot of jewellery. A quick tour of Palma and it was time to head home. The city of Palma was a real surprise. After the coastal disppointments I was pleased to find a beautiful old city, carefully restored and a sophisticated shopping center overflowing with shoe shops and jewellery stores. Palma looks like the perfect backdrop for a Hollywood heyday 50's movie. An air of chic hangs over the town and it's almost reminiscent of Monte Carlo. Smooth, sophisticated and terribly smart. It must be something to do with the warm air, palm trees and open top cars...
