Madrid - so hot it's cool.

Hip is often defined as much by attitude and style as by the people who frequent a place. In Europe at the moment the number one cool couple is without a doubt The Beckhams. For those across the pond who are not au fait with these A'list celebrities they are the most famous export to come from the UK since tea. Mrs Beckham, once a Spice Girl, is now better known for attending glitzy parties and a glamorous lifestyle, while her husband, David, England's football captain is renowned the world over for his talents as a football player and his rugged good looks.

What does this have to do with Hip Travel you may ask? Well the ultra-cool couple has just relocated to Madrid as David transferred from Manchester United to Real Madrid, making the Spanish capital the hippest place to be. Interest in the town has soared and the newspaper columns and travel pages are full of praise for the Spanish capital.

Madrid is known as Europe's most vibrant capital city. The old world charm and culture combined with a hip attitude and buzzing nightlife makes the Spanish city a must to visit. The town has much to offer: a cultural center, shopping haven and culinary hotspot as well as laid back lifestyle where siesta time is sacred and bars stay open until the small hours...

Madrid has something for everyone. Culture and history buffs will love the magnificent museums while those who prefer to take a walking tour of the town's sightseeing spots can keep busy with a stroll from the impressive Plaza Mayor to the Basilica de San Isidro. Other must do's include shopping and sampling the mouth watering tapas in the city's many traditional eateries. And there's always the football!

The best time to visit is definitely spring (March to May) and October. During those times the weather is pleasant and the tourist count is low. May is a great time to visit as it coincides with Madrid's biggest fiestas (Fiesta de la Comunidad de Madrid and Fiestas de San Isidro). Throughout the summer months the city's temperatures can soar to a stifling 43C.

The museums in Madrid are world famous. Stop by the Museo del Prado which focuses on Spanish Art (Velazquez, Goya and El Greco) or the Centro de Arte Reina de Sofia, home to a score of Picassos where the entry fee is a tiny 3.01Euros.

For local culture and history visit the Palacio Real. Originally built in 1734 and renovated by Felipe V, the palace boasts an impressive collection of antiques. Carry on south, and take in the Moorish quarter dating back to the 9thCentury.
