Once in the room, a motel-style family set-up, we became aware of a damp smell that wasn't going to go away. When had they last had visitors in this room, I wondered...
Guidebook in hand we decided to set off by foot - The road was pitch black, no traffic, no lights, no signs. Opting to go left we figured we'd eventually find a town. At a loss and hungry, we set off optimistic that sooner or later we'd hit Oak Bluffs. We walked, and walked until 45minutes later we reached a small town... and lights. Civilization at last. Here, by some miracle we ventured into The Offshore Ale Co., a relaxed restaurant that serves up seafood and pizza - an oasis of comfort and warmth in our wasteland of an evening. The cosy atmosphere is emphasised by the wooden décor, beer barrels and friendly staff who tread carefree on the peanut-shell strewn floor. On the menu, eclectic and rustic local food abounds including kettles of seafood gumbo, local oysters and lobsters, grilled steaks, burgers and wood-fire oven pizza. Having dined on delicious squid and thick, smooth and tasty, rusty-coloured chowder we asked the lovely waitress to order us a cab home... Oakbluffs is one of Martha's Vineyards bigger towns and has a lot to offer. You'll find everything here from bars and clubs for those seeking some nightlife, and beach activities along with car and beach cruiser rental places. One of Oak Bluff's main attractions is its famous Flying Horses Carousel. The attraction dates back to 1876 and is said to be America's oldest. Rides are still just $1. To go with the fun, treat yourself to homemade ice cream from the Carousel Ice Cream Factory. If you prefer chocolate or fudge try Ben & Bill's Chocolate Emporium or Murdick's Fudge, both on Circuit Avenue. As the sun rose the attraction of Martha's Vineyard became clear as day. Untamed and rough beaches provide the ideal place to jog or stroll, stretching as far as the eye could see. There is something raw and rugged about the coastline here that clearly states nature rules.
