Trendy soundtracks?

© Steve Juon

I may have been the only one to notice, but it seems as though lately there's been a GLUT of hip-hop dominated soundtracks on the market. Even for movies with as much commercial crossover appeal as _Rush Hour_ and _Blade_, we've come away with not the typical pop music appeal by The Wallflowers and Matther Sweet but the hardcore sounds of Jay-Z and Mystikal.

While one may be attempted to applaud the sudden change of heart at the record industry level in mixing good filmds with good hip-hop instead of wack films with soundtrack that outsell them or vice versa, the trend also raises some questions which I believe deserve a few good answers.

* What is the real purpose behind mixing pop films and hip-hop?

* Do rappers with loyalistic fans realize the impact of paying $12.99 each time they make yet another side appearance?

* Is the industry in fact counting on this loyalty to move their product?

* What's more important, an all-star lineup of artists and songs, or a series of cuts actually related to the film?

* Are soundtracks these days little more than an excuse for record labels to cash in on the "MTV Party to Go" phenomenon?

Tell me your thoughts.

Peace, Flash
