Digital Crack

Don't sweat it now that "they" ganked Napster. There are still plenty of places on the net that allow free music downloads. I don't really see a difference between theses services and Napster...bottom line, they all offer downloadable MP3s for free, or point you to sites that do. I thought the issue was "free music" and "artist gettin' paid"...nah, sounds more like the bully on the block (the RIAA) cockblockin'...Get on these sites while you can...at the rate the RIAA is suing/buying up everybody they might not be around much longer.

I'm going to start with MP3.com, the obvious alternative. If you were to simply type mp3 in your address bar, as if you were doing a search, chances are you would be automaticially taken to MP3.com. Most people equate mp3.com with "free shyt", implying because it's free, it's not good. That's far from the truth. MP3.com is more synonymous with indie music and contrary to popular belief, they DO have the big names too: DJ Muggs (Cypress Hill), Poor Righteous Teachers, Deadly Venoms, Bahamadia and more. For more artists like Q-Tip, Snoop Dogg, Redman, hit The WFTS Network Station. An added bonus is that you get a free account in which to store your mp3s.

You can't really get into the mp3/Napster debate without mentioning my man Chuck D. Needless to say, his site Rapstation offers downloadable mp3s. Not only does his site offer mp3s, some bigger sites, such as Real.com and Tucows Music offer/link to Rapstation downloads.

SonicNet - probably has the best selection of hip hop mp3s: Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Pharoahe Monch, Rasco, De La Soul, Planet Asia, DJ Muggs/GZA, Pharcyde, Beastie Boys, Dialated People, b.r.e.a.d./Modu Crew and more.

Listen.com is one of those sites that points you to mp3s (and videos) all over the net. If you're looking for a particilar artist, start here first. Listen.com's mp3 database includes most of the sites mention above, so if you start here you'll save yourself a great deal of time and frustration.

If MP3.com and Napster had a love child, it would definately called Audio Galaxy. Audio Galaxy is a site AND software, combining the best features of MP3.com with the functionality of Napster.

Gnetulla is an ugly program, but it does the job. Gnetulla is more like Napster than any other program, but less user friendly than Napster. One plus for this file sharing software is that it allows users to share any type of
