Winning Entry - Why De La Soul Ain't Dead Contest

© Rebekah Meredith

I posed the following question to Suite 101:

Why do you think De La Soul was able to stay together as a group, while equally talented groups broke up, for example: Tribe Called Quest, Fugees, etc. In other words, Why De La Soul Ain't Dead?

Below is the winning entry:

First I would like to say that I thought the comparison of De La Soul to the Fugees and Tribe called Quest was a pretty accurate match. The groups obviously all display a river of talent.

It pleases me to know that De la Soul has survived as a group for this long. In my opinion it is only the strong will of the group that keeps them together. They came in together and want to stick with it. Friendship within a group is crucial and I think De la Soul is a tight nit mini crew. I feel that there size also helps the matter. Larger groups have a hard time keeping every one happy. The members of De la Soul are all working in the same direction(In most ways they share the same dreams)

Why couldn't the other groups remain together? It is difficult to give a strait answer when you are not in their situation. It could have been internal problems or just plain inconvenience. You also may have to consider the worst: they may have split for money reasons(I love both the Fugees and Tribe Called Quest and would hate to think they were just in it for the money.) but you never know. All we see is great music and this doesn't always translate to great people.
