remembering the B.R.O. scale from early editions of BLAZE magazine --R.I.P.)
R.hymes--score of 1-10 based on tyles/concepts/storytelling/etc. O.riginality--score of 1-10 based on innovation/ingenuity/uniqueness ________________________________________________________________ THIRSTIN HOWL III/Skillionaire (bootleg) B.||||||6.5 R.|||||||||9.9 O.|||||||||9.7 "free rent, like gas and phone, a mamma's boy even though my ass is grown, got the same bedroom since third grade, still be living here when i'm eight hundred and eighty-eight..."--Still Live With My Moms. okay, any emcee who begins his album setting himself up in a degrading position like this (joke or not,) wins the title for most secure emcee in the industry. this guy gets me excited about being an emcee--he's got everything: 100% original flow, abundance of metaphors and similes, aliteration, concepts, orinality to the nth power and a love for emceeing that i haven't seen since the late eighties. anyone who bootlegs his own album to sell it underground around the nation (RAWKUS gave him a release date somewhere around 2002, so he wanted to speed up the process,) represents a love for the art that rises above all the rest. in every song he hits you with "nonsense, my conscience is conquered," and "more styles than rikers island can count beds." "Skillionaire" is basically THIRSTIN'S brain laid with life out in front of the listener--after a few songs you realize this guy is out of control--he's a clepto that videotapes his shoplifting excursions and samples the wife of the store owner screaming "john, they're stealing!" to use as the refrain of two songs. his baiting of emcees is borderline ludicrous to the point of patronizing, but he's still polite--"like would you like me to help you pack your bags," and let's you know what you're up against--"before battles get a permit to come within two blocks radius, case your mother see you preaching, study fire exit safety tips," especially if your attempts are idle nonsense, "you can lose or you can lose, those are your options..." THIRSTIN includes a plethora of freestyles/promos done for deejays and radio shows as well as organized written rhymes constructed with straight up instrumental beats jacked from gza, davina, east flatbush project (you know the one,) and cappadonna. plus, his crew "spit squad," (all of which also have saliva slick aliases to coincide with the song "spit boxers"--figure out the metaphor for yourself.) are all tight in their own regard, (surprising in this modern day nepotistic, social climbing setting, where most men are standing next to men who need to be deep sea clue diving getting.)
