I got a chance to go see Black Eyed Peas perform live recently. My boy Shaddam Hussein hit me up a few days before the show with comp tickets (he got the hookup through his job at City Museum). One would think with all the hip hop I promote, both online and off, getting complimentary tickets to a local show would be as easy as taking candy from a baby; but those of you who know the St. Louis hip hop game, know Contemporary and Anheuser Busch (the producer and backer of most local shows) show no love to small, independent hip hop promoters such as myself. I'm going to write someone at Contemporary Group to see what's up with that...I mean what does a sista have to do to get some promo tix for contests?
St. Louis doesn't get too many REAL hip hop acts. For the most part, St. Louis serves as centerstage for rap and r&b artists capitalizing off the mainstream's newest exploit: hip hop and r&b flava. Nothing else gets much airplay. Realizing that, I knew exactly what to expect when I entered Riverport, the venue hosting the concert...and I wasn't disappointed. The first thing that stuck out to me upon entering the venue was a lack of black hip hoppers. Heads won't go see a hip hop act opening for a white band. Want heads to show up? Have an all hip hop ticket. Judging from the crowd you would think you were at a Hanson show. And to make matters worse, most of the young white crowd had never even heard of Black Eyed Peas. I felt for the Peas...they had their work cut out for them. Go To Page: 1 2
