The Guide to Underground Hip Hop On MP3.com

I got turned on to MP3.com by a friend of mine who was excited about their Beam-It program (software that allows you to upload cds from your collection in minutes) and was bragging about how he could access his cds online from any place in the world with any computer and internet access. I went to MP3.com with the intent of downloading the program and moving on. I wasn't interested in unknown artists, earlier I made the mistake of clicking on a freestyle that was "wack"  and I figured if that kid was on the top of the charts, the rest had to be super wack to say the least. I was just about to give up when a song title caught my eye. It was "The Elements" by Rha Goddess. Anyone who knows hip hop knows the elements: emceeing, deejaying, graffiti and breaking. Hmmmm...a song about the elements by a b-gyrl! I knew this was a sign. I had to click. And I click I did. That click changed my opinion of hip hop on MP3.com. There is good hip hop on MP3.com, as a matter of fact, there's GREAT hip hop on MP3.com, you just have to know where to find it. Below is an introduction to hip hop on MP3.com. It might change the way you think about hip hop music, especially underground music on the internet. It did for me.

The best place to start is Wordz of Wizdom, the official hip hop station magazine on MP3.com and whatever you do, don't leave this station magazine without stocking up on the Essentials, the Official MP3.com Hip Hop Guide to "10 Definately Downloadables" broken down by category. Current categories include: Hip-hop/Rap CDs, Hip-hop, Rap, Alternative Hip-hop, Hardcore Hip-hop, World Hip-hop, Women Of Hip-hop, Latin Hip-hop, Dancehall, Top 20 1999 Countdown, and Paradise Interviews. Other features include Vote for Your Favorite Essential Hip-hop CD!, Nominate a CD, and Create Your Own Essentials.

Hip Hop is broken down into 13 subgenres: Alternative Hip Hop, Bass, Beats, Dirty South, East Coast, Freestyles, Hip Hop, Horrorcore, New School, Old School, Rap, Spiritual Rap, West Coast, and Hardcore Rap and  each subgenre has it's own official music director and station page. My favorites are Hip Hop Music Director (for obvious reasons) and the East Coast Music Director (did i fail to mention I'm from the east?).

Next I recommend you examine b-gYrL Radio - The All Female Hip Hop Station from
