Best New Artist = Mos Def
Awarded to the new Hip-Hop artist who has emerged between February 1999 and January 31, 2000 with the freshest style, technique or presentation.

Okay, for those of you who still haven't jumped on the Mos Def train, I'm going to give you one more opportunity before this train leaves the station. Mos Def is Best New Artist, hands down. It's refreshing to see an artist who still believes in paying dues (Lyricist Lounge, Most Wanted and numerous other cameo appearances). Mos is the real deal, a solid emcee which is rare in a game crammed with entertainers. He is one of a handful of artists "keeping it real" at a time when many artists choose to cash in on their street credentials. Finally, Mos Def uses his fame to bring attention to social issues and recently issued a statement condemning the trial of 13 year-old who is scheduled to be tried as an adult on murder charges. Not since Chuck D. have we had an artist take such a strong stance on a public issue. Definitely my rookie of the year.

Producer of the Year = The Roots - Come Alive
Awarded to the Hip-Hop producer who exemplifies overall excellence and innovation between February 1999 and January 31, 2000

A LIVE ROOTS ALBUM! That statement should be enough for any serious hip hop fan, but for those of you who need convincing let it be known that the Roots have resuscitated the live element of hip hop with Black Thought's talent for ad-libbing, and the acoustic acrobatics of beat-boxers Rahzel and Scratch. If that doesn't make you an easy win for Producer of the Year, I don't know what does. Anybody can do it, but can they do it live?

Artist of the Year = Duh?!
Awarded to the Hip-Hop artist who has achieved overall excellence in performance and recording between February 1999 and January 31, 2000

I can't decide. I'm going to have to get back to you on this one.

Song of the Year The Roots
= The Love of My Life
Awarded to the song or single that has achieved outstanding music sales and/or had a major impact on Hip-Hop culture between February 1999 and January 31,2000.

"Sometimes I wouldn'ta made it if it wasn't for you Hip-Hop, you the love of my life and that's true"

For this one I had to bring out the props

Listen | Lyrics

If you still don't get it, you need to have your head examined.
