AUM

Aum is a Sanskrit word. Sanskrit is one of the oldest known written languages on Earth. It originated in India.

The Aum (Om) is the basis of all sounds. It is the universal symbol for God. The Aum is The Sound of Creation

This symbol is the universe, all that is and could be. It does not stand for the universe, it is the universe. It is extremely auspicious. The chanting of AUM will purify the mind, destroy all evil, all egoism.

Aum is the basic mantra of all Sanskrit mantras. It refers to A(jagrat), U(swapna), and M(sushupti). The three regions refer to the three planes of existence, physical, astral and casual. The silence which follows each utterance of Aum suggests the state of Absolute Being, or Brahman, which is the source and end of everything. The cosmic sound AUM is called the Pranava . The Mantra AUM gives birth to rays of Light bringing illumination to the mind.

The graphic is a Sanskrit syllable, the part that looks like a 3 is the A, the tail hanging off that is the U and the dot above them is the M. There is a fourth part as well, a soundless part, at the end. The word AUM (OM) is made up of three letters that express the three great aspects of GOD: A - denotes the power of God to create the Universe. U - denotes the power of God to preserve the Universe. M - denotes the power of God to dissolve the Universe.

On this basis, God is known to Hindus by the three other names: A - Brahma (Creator) U - Vishnu (Preserver) M - Shiva (Destroyer)

The A is creation, it happens at the back of the throat where the sound originates; the U is preservation, it happens in the middle of your mouth and the M is destruction, it happens at the lips where the sound stops. The A is also symbolic of the waking state of consciousness, the U the dreaming state, the M deep sleep and the soundless fourth part is symbolic of the state beyond these three.

The syllable AUM is the most sacred symbol in Hinduism. It is also called the 4-element syllable. The letter "A", "U", "M" are the three element and the fourth element is the 'silence' from which the sound of AUM arises and to which it subsides. The sound produced by "A" signifies all that is observed and perceived in the conscious
