Calling Mother Nature: Cell Phones Can Take a Hike

Mount Chocorua, New Hampshire
cost $3000 in labor and equipment. Volunteers are also placed in danger by rescuing a lost or hurt hiker.

Obviously, it’s better to not ever need to use the phone for the purpose of being rescued. No one wishes to be in harms’ way. Given that kind of circumstance, even I cannot disagree that a cell phone serves as a nice little insurance policy. Call for help when you break your leg on top of a mountain. But don’t just call for the sake of talking. Reaching out to touch someone should be done anywhere else but the tranquil woods. Otherwise, the quiet serenity of the forest will become as polluted as the rest of our lives. Isn’t that what we were trying to escape from in the first place?
