Twin Eagles Trail in the Lost Creek Wilderness

© Virginia O'Connor

Introduction

Numerous trails run through the Lost Creek Wilderness, and the Twin Eagles trail is only one of them. The Twin Eagles trail is well-traveled although narrow. The first mile or so it climbs very gently up and away from the road and you are quickly in the wilderness.

Trail Rating

  • Boots: I give it a gentle two-boots rating.
  • Kids: Sure, kids will love the views.
  • Dogs: Yes, but this is definitely wild animal country, so keep them on a leash!
  • Facilities: Nope, not at this trail head.

What to Bring

As always (you should be used to this by now), bring a jacket. The weather in the Rockies changes quickly, so be prepared. Bring your pack with water and maybe a light snack. I didn't get to an "end" on this trail, but I understand it has a good length.

How to Get There

From Colorado Springs, take highway 24 west to the tiny town of Lake George. Just past the town, take a right onto Park County Road #77 (Tarryall Road). You will travel along a paved road for 15 miles to the Twin Eagles Trailhead. A sign marks the parking lot on the right side of the road.

Trail Specifics

The trail begins by crossing a foot bridge and heading up through a divide in the rocks. There are numerous trails within this region, so as you cross the bridge, hang a left and head off on that trail. It looks like this picture.

The trail has markers all along it, so it is extremely easy to follow. After you climb up between the rocks, you will top out on a small plain. Take a look around. This is one of the more beautiful sights you will see in your life. See the pictures.

As you look to the left, you will see a rock pileup that looks really neat. See the picture here.

As you cross the path through the valley, you will climb a slight rise on the other side. At the top of the rise, expect a significant breeze if the day is clear. You will turn right and head through the trees continuing on the trail. If you look down at the turn, you will see a working cattle ranch.

The trail winds through a forest of trees with a few scattered huge boulders here and there to remind you that you are still in the Rocky Mountains. As I turned one corner, this dead tree caught my eye and I had to take this picture.

This article is inaccurate in many respects. First, there ARE facilities at the trail head. Park next to the foot bridge where you normally would, then walk back toward the campsites in the directio ...
