  • Visit the School If you possibly can, take a trip to each school you are considering before you apply. Tour the campus, attend an information session, and try to take some time to explore on your own (make sure to see the places the tour guide ignored)! If you can, talk to current students and/or alumni. Ask lots of questions. If you can't visit, try to at least take an online tour, participate in a chat session, and email lots of people involved in the college. After you are admitted, take another trip to each college you are considering. Spend the night with a current student and sit in on some classes you would consider taking. The second trip is more important than the first, so if you can only take one, save it for the spring.
  • Connect with Teachers Good recommendations and helpful advice can really make the difference between you getting into the school of your dreams and you being stuck at nameless college or overwhelming state university. Make sure to connect with a few teachers, especially those in the areas close to what you might study in college.
  • Don't Slack Off After Applying Colleges can and do reject students who have already been admitted on the basis of precipitous drops in second semester grades. Also, many colleges make use of waitlists, and if your grades stay high you will have a better chance of making it in off the waitlist.
  • Believe In Yourself Confidence is very important. If you feel uncertain or unsure, this will come across in your interview or application essay, and it will turn off the potential colleges. Plus, confidence will make sure you don't avoid applying anywhere.
