When adults decide to go back to school, many of them want to enroll in a special program, designed with their unique needs in mind. This article profiles a few unique colleges that offer a variety of innovative options for reentry students.
This Catholic college, with programs primarily for women, offers over 40 undergraduate programs as well as graduate degrees in professional leadership, nursing, and education. The unique programs for adult learners include an accelerated degree program, an intensive Weekend College that meets every other weekend, and distance learning either via the Internet or via interactive television at satellite locations. The accelerated program allows students to combine weekend and evening classes in career-related majors so that they can earn a degree as quickly as possible. Graduate education students can even earn certification as a Montessori teacher! Special internship opportunities are also provided to help students get the hands-on job skills they need. Carlow has also developed the unique Carlow Hill College program, a special programs that enrolls primarily African American women over the age of 30 in need of substantial financial aid. It allows them to earn a degree in an environment that it sensitive to their cultural and life experiences and their special academic needs. For students in the Weekend College or accelerated programs, a special credit-bearing course is available which helps them readjust to coursework, understand their choices at Carlow, learn to do research and critical righting, and become comfortable with educational technology.
