When adults decide to go back to school, many of them want to enroll in a special program, designed with their unique needs in mind. This article profiles a few unique colleges that offer a variety of innovative options for reentry students.

Carlow College in Pittsburgh, PA: http://www.carlow.edu
This Catholic college, with programs primarily for women, offers over 40 undergraduate programs as well as graduate degrees in professional leadership, nursing, and education. The unique programs for adult learners include an accelerated degree program, an intensive Weekend College that meets every other weekend, and distance learning either via the Internet or via interactive television at satellite locations. The accelerated program allows students to combine weekend and evening classes in career-related majors so that they can earn a degree as quickly as possible. Graduate education students can even earn certification as a Montessori teacher! Special internship opportunities are also provided to help students get the hands-on job skills they need.
Carlow has also developed the unique Carlow Hill College program, a special programs that enrolls primarily African American women over the age of 30 in need of substantial financial aid. It allows them to earn a degree in an environment that it sensitive to their cultural and life experiences and their special academic needs. For students in the Weekend College or accelerated programs, a special credit-bearing course is available which helps them readjust to coursework, understand their choices at Carlow, learn to do research and critical righting, and become comfortable with educational technology.

University of Mobile in Alabama School of Special Programs: http://www.umobile.edu/main/specprog.htm
This Christian university offers a flexible program for adults returning to school with a variety of skills and needs. The first element of the UMobile adult degree is the Basic Core Program, which allows students with little or no college experience to take general education courses one evening a week and one weekend day a month for two years and fulfil all general education requirements. Transferring credits is easy to help your degree progress as quickly as possible. For those who have completed the Basic Core Program or who are returning to school with two years of college already under their belts, UMobile offers the Adult Degree Completion Program, a three-semester program of courses focused around the topic of leadership that meet for four hours once each week. Coursework is scheduled in advance, and notebooks with detailed assignments are distributed to help you plan your time and keep organized and on top of your schoolwork.
