If your lawn is something you can live without this summer, let it go. Illegal watering gets you a five hundred dollar fine in metro Atlanta, and that buys a lot of grass seed. I wasn't kidding about the water police!

I save as much water as I can for use in the garden, from melted ice in picnic coolers and leftover drinking water. I toss this water onto plants on the porch or near the door. I baby some of my hydrangeas in this way, too.

I'm on a hunt for Water-Grabbers (also known as TerraSorb) and if any readers know of a source for these, I'd like hear form you. These products are basically a granulated from of the stuff in disposable diapers. They're scarce around here, for the obvious reason.

***EDITOR'S UPDATE***June 18th

I found some water retaining crystals on-line at Hallson Gardens This is not a paid promotional announcement, it's a reference to a very similar product which seems to be unavailable in my parched neck of the woods. I'm going to try it. Maybe I can still save a few of my annuals yet!

Yes, it looks like a freeze-dried version of the material in disposable nappies, and holds at least as much water as a big diaper when soaked. If you've held a wet baby lately, you know that's a LOT of liquid!

Do YOU have any water saving tricks you can share with those of us in the parched South? If so, please share them! We need help!

There is massive road construction in our area, and my on-line access shifts from slow to fast to zero depending on where the road crews have hit phone lines.

Hi Emily,

What I have done is to use a Ross Root feeder.

It drills a nice two foot hole into which you can later pour in the gels. I often use it to penetrate hard soils, then pouring in organi ...

I've used plastic chopsticks to poke holes deep into potted soil to insert those gel things to pots. Works pretty well.

I'm still trying to find a reliable method for getting gels around deep roote ...
