Reality Gardening CheckI'm more of a plant swap person myself, unless I see something I know that I want, know it will grow here, AND is something I can actually use. Otherwise, I might just as well plant the cash and have done with it. You can read about the mail-order experiences of other gardeners at The Virginia Native Plant Society lists quite a few good sources for indigenous plant material; this is their 1999 guide. The locations of the nurseries are listed; not all of these issue catalogs, but some will ship will mail order by telephone request.
My editor, Carol Wallace, recommends this site as well: Bear in mind that all mail order material has been under environmental stress due to its' time in transportation, and don't forget, if you aren't home to attend to the plants as soon as they arrive, they probably won't make it.
