A Century of Xena

For those of you who have been living under a rock when it comes to Xena: Warrior Princess news, the one hundredth episode of the series will be aired in January. In celebration of this momentous event, your valiant warrior columnist has tackled a task of titanic proportions!

(Many of you who are on the myriad Internet mailing lists dedicated to our favorite warrior woman have probably already heard about this, but there are those who aren't as into this whole fandom thing. Bear with me while I clue them in.)

Announcing The Century Awards! A fan-sponsored celebration of one hundred episodes of Xena: Warrior Princess. This festive event has been designed to show the cast and crew of that wonderful show just how much we appreciate all the hard work they've done to entertain us over the past several years.

Sound like fun? Well it is! Just point your browser over to the official Century Awards website -- www.geocities.com/xenavote -- for more information. But here's the basic gist of what you'll find there.

There are twenty categories that will be open for nominations until November 13, 1999. At the end of the nomination stage, the top four nominees will go head to head to determine the final winners! Trophies of some sort will be sent to the winners, but the intention is for as many fans of Xena to get involved as possible!

Anyway, more information on just how to submit your nominations is available over at the website. Give it a look-see and cast your vote!

Here are some of my nominations -- with 20 categories I won't go into all of my choices, but here are the big ones, along with my reasoning behind them. I kind of jump from place to place, but this is really intended to just get you thinking about the whole thing.

Best Director in my book goes to Oley Sassonne, whose credits include The Price and The Bitter Suite. All five of the episodes he has directed for the series are very stylish and beautiful. He has a wonderful knack for doing fantasy, and I can always tell when he's behind the camera.

Most Overrated Episode goes to A Day in the Life. While this is a good episode, and I like it, I personally think that many fans rank this episode much more highly than it really deserves. I'm sure I'll get a lot of flack for that choice, but it's the way I see it.
