Here we are, rapidly approaching the season premieres of both Xena and Hercules. Where do we stand, five years into the phenomenon?
Well, as you probably already know, the Great Sorbowski (aka Kevin Sorbo) is bidding adieu to Hercules after five (and a bit) seasons of Legendary Journeys. We have eight more episodes and that's it. The show's time slot will be filled by two half-hour action shows (reportedly entitled Jack of All Trades and Cleopatra 2525), but will they be able to persevere and continue the high quality work we've come to expect from Renaissance Pictures? Only time will tell. I was both impressed and disappointed by the fifth season of Hercules. I liked the darkness of the show, and the exotic locales visited. I loved the romance between Herc and Morrigan, and thought that the Iolaus 2 stories were wonderful. I was left with a decidedly empty feeling at the conclusion of the Dahak arc, and was really annoyed by the season finale Revelations. With only eight episodes left, I don't really know where things are going. Are we going to get a taste of the rumored "End of the Gods" scenario that first reared its head back when Dahak first appeared on Xena? There was no real indication in the last few episodes of Hercules that would indicate what sort of direction things would go in, or how it would all wrap up, though something tells me they aren't going to use the ending described in the original myth. I will watch (and tape) the final episodes of the series, and when it's all over I'm sure I'll have comments on it. But until then I don't know for certain. I really enjoyed the fourth season of Xena. While there were some stories that stumbled (I thought the worst of the lot was In Sickness and in Hell) the overall arc of Gabrielle's quest and Xena's acceptance of her destiny was intruiging, and I thought the powers that be did a very good job with it. I see another major change in the works for the direction and tone of the series. Xena has finally accepted her role as a warrior, and how her "dark side" fits into that destiny. As a result, her quest for redemption (which has largely taken a back seat the last season or two) is over. She is now ready to move on to the next stage of her journey, whatever that entails.
