Gardening With Chickweek I have to laugh at the idea of "Gardening with Chickweed"... Just try gardening withOUT it! Chickweed will pop up everywhere from the lawn and garden to your very houseplants (which makes it readily available in winter too, if you are so inclined). It has been said that there is no part of the world that does not contain Chickweed, and while one may argue the Poles, it's still pretty accurate to say that wherever man has settled, so has Chickweed. Many plants are actually misidentified as Chickweed, so if you're going gathering, always be CERTAIN you know what you are after. Some 'chickweed' actually belongs to the purslane family, while others are actually species of cerastium known as the 'Mouse Ear' chickweeds. However, only the botanical Stellaria Media is the true Chickweed to which we are referring here. Our Chickweed is a leggy trailing plant often found trying to establish itself as a ground cover. You can identify it easily by finding a slight line of small hairs that runs up only one single side of its stem. When the stem branches into a pair of leaves, the hairs will switch their position to the opposite side, yet still only run up a single side at a time. The leaves grow in pairs, are oval and range up to ½ an inch long, featuring a pale green color and smooth finish. Chickweed features tiny white star-like flowers that give the herb it's Latin name of Stellaria Media, which bloom from late March through the Fall. Birds both domestic and wild love Chickweed, which is most likely where it derived its common name. Health wise, it appears to be as healthy for them as it is for us. It is best to harvest Chickweed at its peak anywhere from May to July, and it may be used fresh or dried in any of the traditional methods. Magical Uses Gender: Feminine Chickweed is often used in workings to strengthen or maintain a relationship, or other rituals of love. It can be carried for the same purpose. While its area of concentration is relationships, Chickweed can actually be beneficial in any lunar based workings. Also, consider Chickweed for animal magic or bird magic, or when working with a bird totem or patron.
