Online Herb Seed Sources

The following list is by no means complete, but a cursory look at what the Internet has to offer. It is offered as a starting point from which to order seeds. Ordering online is convenient, a great alternative to the traditional mail ordering of the past. While mail ordering is still a huge part of seed ordering, many do not want to take the time to fill out the form, write a check, and address and stamp an envelope. Being online is another way companies can reach a wider range of gardeners.

Shepherd's Garden Seeds

Click on "Herb Seeds". Shepherd's is a top-notch seed supplier; however, they do not offer a wide variety of herbs. Of the basils offered, the basil 'Greek Mini' Window Box Basil is a very compact plant that could be used in window boxes or as a border edging. Their 'Maenglak' Thai Lemon Basil promises to be hardier than domestic lemon basils. Under their "Kitchen Herbs" section are herbs for those who would like to start a culinary herb garden. Included are: Broadleaf Sweet Basil, French Thyme, Red Rubin Purple Leaf Basil, Dukat Dill, Sweet Marjoram, Broad-leaf Sage, Chives, Garden Sorrel, True Greek Oregano, and single leaf Italian parsley.

Cook's Garden

Notable herbs at Cook's are their organic parsleys, nine basils including Mammoth, Red Rubin, cinnamon, liquorice and purple ruffles. The Mammoth variety can be used to wrap meats before grilling.

Johnny's Seeds

Johnny's has more herb choices than the previous two mentioned. In their basil section, they have Thai basil 'Siam Queen', sweet Thai basil, spicy bush, red rubin, purple ruffles, osmin purple, Nufar basil, which is the fusarium tolerant type, and many more. They have some unique offerings such as Chinese yam ashwahghanda (Withania somnifera), an ayurvedic medicinal herb, epazote, and stevia. Their culinary herb section could use a little beefing up, as there are only three choices.

Thompson & Morgan

Thompson & Morgan gets the bargain award with their offering of a lime basil for only $.99 for a packet of seeds. Other interesting herb choices include: lemon grass, garlic Chinese chives, and caraway. Their basil seed collection includes, sweet, Thai, lemon and cinnamon; however, they are showing this collection as out of stock. Another herb collection offered is the aromatic collection, which includes parsley, fennel, mint, lemon balm, chives and sage all for the great price of $3.99. A number of other interesting collections are offered at great prices.

Burpee's Seeds

Burpee's offers many herb favorites, stevia and a sunny herb collection with 7 seed packets and 9 plant markers. This site is well-done, with great descriptions and pictures, lots of other flower and vegetable seeds and accessories.
