The following are a few ideas and tips to keep herb gardeners busy during this season:

HERBAL THANKSGIVING
Check out my 1998 Herbal Thanksgiving article for good ideas on herbs and Thanksgiving meal preparations: http://www.suite101.com/article.cfm/691/...

INDOOR GARDENING
B. Smith with Style at women.com has an article on indoor herb gardening, and gives some ideas for unique planters.

SAVE THE TWIGS
Don't forget to save all your herbal twigs from harvest to burn in the fireplace for added scent. Bundled and tied with raffia, these make great gifts or package toppers too.

GIFT GIVING
Give some of your herb harvest away for holiday gifts. Combine with kitchen utensils and recipes for a really nice presentation. Purchase interesting containers for herbs. There are so many choices for decorative bottles and glass jars in stores today, the only problem will be the choices you have to make!

MULCH
Rake leaves and use them to mulch your herbs, or use straw. The mulch not only protects perennial herbs from colder temperatures, but also will put nutrients into the soil. To keep leaves from blowing away, cover with large branches or twigs. Mounding soil around the base of a plant can be a very good method of protection for those areas prone to cold, strong, drying winds.

AROMATIC TIME
Fall is a great time to simmer herbal potpourri. Pine and other woodsy aromas seem appropriate for this time of year.

MAKE AN HERBAL WREATH
Picture this-- candles burning, potpourri simmering, YOU sitting there with your cup of herbal tea, maybe some new age or Renaissance music playing, and a beautiful herbal wreath on the door. Read my article "Make an Herbal Wreath" and see how easy it is to create a wreath for your home or as a gift. http://www.suite101.com/article.cfm/herb...

RELAX AND THINK
Now is a good time to sit down with a cup of herbal tea and think about the past season-- the successes and failures, what you can do better and what else you can plant. Determine what seeds and plants to buy. Start drawing up your design plans and lists. Create a timetable for getting things done in late winter and early spring-- after the rush of the holiday season is over, the time for action will be here before you know it!
