The Parsley is blooming and caterpillars are seen, little green monstrosities with over sized heads and faux yellow eyes. What a great find! These caterpillars are special: they will soon transform into beautiful Eastern Tiger Swallowtail butterflies. This is an example of great opportunities that Nature presents for observation. Experiencing the natural world can bring a greater understanding of all life as a whole and can help one experience life in the present, right NOW. The past is stored in memories, but the present is what he have for certain. The future is uncertain. Therefore, it makes sense to enjoy and experience life in the present to the fullest. Enjoying nature, and more precisely, herbs, can be a small but important part of this life experience.
Walking Through A Garden A walk through a garden can be stimulating, educational and enlightening. There may be a new plant or animal sighting. Brushing by some rosemary or mint can unleash great aromas; looking at leaf colors and textures can be an art in itself. How about feeling some woolly lamb's ear? Many may admit to this tactile pleasure. Growing, Planting Gardeners will say there is hardly anything better than nurturing a plant to maturity. Being the steward of a piece of land, no matter how big or small, is a serious responsibility, but one that can have great rewards. The commitment to not poisoning that piece of land can be a part of a person's accomplishment and good feeling. Harvesting Collecting and preserving herbs is a reward for nurturing plants to maturity. Sharing herbal preparations with others gives happiness and also returns it to the giver. Cooking With, Eating and Using Herbs These are the ultimate end rewards for growing herbs. Experiencing tastes like rosemary potatoes, lemon dill fish or lemon verbena cake makes it all worthwhile! Just using your own herbs in cooking and medicinal preparations is a source of pride. (Editor's Note: Sharing these experiences with children can not only lead them into their own happy experiences with nature now, but also may help them to be serious gardeners or open up career paths into their adult life. A lima bean planted in a Dixie cup did it for me!) Go To Page: 1
