Add Garden Interest

You've got all plants lined up, garden plot dug, you're ready to put together a great herb garden. How about adding some structure for added interest? A sea of plants can get boring without something to catch the eye. Here are some ideas to motivate, and to make gardening fun.

Edging

Edging will define your herb plot as something special. For a brick edging, dig a trough 2-3 inches deep and lay small red bricks at an angle, or lay flat.

Willow edging: Martha Stewart has a great idea for willow edging, which is a traditional English border: http://www.marthastewart.com/good_things...

Architectural Salvage

Old pedestals, bricks, statues, any rusted metal thing, think "anything that can hold dirt or hold up a pot", and you may find a great item for your garden. Find an architectural salvage place near you (if you're lucky) or locate sites being demolished and just ask the people in charge if you can have or buy an item.

Natural Items

Find natural items such as large and small stones, drift wood, weathered wood. Of course make sure they do not belong to someone else!

New Items

Purchase an item as a centerpiece of your plot or garden. These sites offer statuary, urns, fountains, sculptures, gazing globes, and much more:

Leprechauns and Such

Leprecauns, gnomes and gargoyles can add interest; the trick is finding items which are in good taste (as opposed to goofy). Here are some very distinguished leprechauns: http://www.the-brookfield-co.com/newbroo...

Make a Garden Trough

This is a great idea to add that Celtic look to your garden and landscape for pennies, as opposed to hundreds of dollars for the real thing. These sites have pictures and directions on how to make one:

Build Your Own

Make a wood trellis. Pour some concrete into a large plastic nursery pot and make a garden face (see above). Look at garden books and magazines to get ideas, and use your own creativity to personalize your garden. It's not difficult to make a one of a kind haven for your plants!
