During these cold winter days, you can look and dream, and maybe plan to go to one or more of these beautiful gardens below when the weather gets warm. These sites prove there are dedicated gardeners at every corner of the earth who love to create life and beauty. I chose sites which included at least a few good photos of their gardens. Some sites may not be in English, but the pictures tell the stories:

--Royal Botanical Gardens, Kew, UK http://www.rbgkew.org.uk/visitor/geog.ht...

This huge botanical garden in the UK covers 300 acres including many theme areas (aquatic garden, bamboo garden, rose pergola, woodland garden) and many glasshouses, each with plants and environments from different areas of the earth (tropical rainforest, desert, carvivorous plants, waterlily house, many more). The map does not appear to load fully on the main page, but don't let that hinder your adventure here. Scroll down to the links to all the different gardens and enjoy.

-- Stekkenplek Zwingelspaan (Our Garden), Netherlands http://home.concepts.nl/~ruud_ien/

Switching to a smaller scale, this is a private garden in the Netherlands. This is the story of a family who moved from the city to the country and made a beautiful garden. Some of it I cannot read, but the beautiful pictures tell the story. They have some English on their pages.

-- South Africa Manie van der Schijff Botanic Garden http://www.up.ac.za/academic/botany/gard...

This botanic garden is known for its collection of cycads, one of which is extinct in the wild (wood cycad).

-- The Holden Arboretum, Kirtland, Ohio, USA http://www.holdenarb.org/

Located twenty five miles east of Cleveland, The Holden Arboretum encompasses over 3,100 acres and is the largest arboretum in the United States. The arboretum is dedicated to collecting woody plants for ornamental and scientific merit for northeastern Ohio.

-- Brisbane Botanic gardens, Mt Coot-Tha, Austrailia http://www.bit.net.au/~bcc.bbg/

This is an extensive collection of native and exotic plants as well as an administration centre, a botanical/horticultural library, an education centre, a botanical laboratory, a 300 seat auditorium, the Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium and the Queensland Herbarium.

-- The Botanical Garden of the University of Gent, Belgium http://www.trabel.com/gent-botanical.htm

Founded in 1797, it includes 8000 speicies of plants and flowers in thematic collections and tropical, subtropical and cactus greenhouses.

-- The Botanic Garden of Petrozavodsk State University, Russia http://www.ptz.karelia.ru/hortus/pbg/inf...

This garden was founded in 1951 with an area of 370 ha. It is the only garden in the northern part of the middle taiga zone of European Russia. By the pictures it looks like a rugged mountain garden. Plants include trees and shrubs of Europe, Asia and America, a herb section (medicinal plants, ornamentals)and nurseries for fruit trees, berry shrubs and ornamentals. The rest of the garden (about 330 ha) is native vegetation, forests, meadows, swamps and rocks. Nice site!
