Susan B. Anthony - The Woman for All Women

Jul 18, 2001 - © Debbie Legare

their was a purpose.

Her campaign continued on and between 1881 and 1886, she published a series of volumes (books) called 'Herstory' of Women's Suffrage. She continued to lecture. In 1883, Susan joined Stanton in Europe and agreed to organize ainternational conference on women to be held in 1888 to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Seneca Falls Convention. The International Conference Of Women proved to be the largest women's conference ever.. It stimulated cooperation between foreign and U.S. reformers but didn't advance the suffrage movements. Her movement again gained strength in 1890 with the National American Woman Suffrage Association.

In 1900, at age 80, she suffered a stoke and was advised to slow down but she said she would rather ,"die in the harness," than give up her work. Her final speech was in Baltimore in 1906. Due to the weather, Anthony got sick, caught double pneumonia and died of heart failure on March 13, 1906. At the time, only 4 states (Utah, Wyoming, Colorado & Idaho) granted suffrage to women, but her movement persevered. Her last speech concluded with the line " Failure IS Impossible"

August 26,1920, Congress finally adopted the 19th amendment giving women the right to vote.

For all that Susan B Anthony stood for and worked for, we all as women have the chance as equals to vote and have our say. There was no doubt that her belief system and family upbringing formed her strong ideals and determination. It didn't stifle or hold her back but inspired, taught and supported her drive. She stood out from other women and that was her strength. Her realization to further women's rights brought her up against the biggest foe there was, state and federal government. She didn't live to see her total dream come to life but her spirit was always in every step made and will forever be as we continue to make our female presence known.
