Using that four letter word... C U R E

That's right, I'm using those letters to form that dreaded word we all ask the doctors about.

As in: "Doc, is there a cure for Hepatitis C?"

Well, I'm here to say that if someone ever tells you they have a CURE for Hepatitis C, you need to run! Run away and don't look back!

Now don't misconstrued my statement and write to me saying that Naomi Judd was seen on TV last week praising God, her doctors and the American Liver Foundation claiming she has been cured. There are several thousand people who are currently testing below 1000 copies of the virus in their blood sample. And at this time, the "experts" in the field of Hepatology are using a very different word when referring to that group of patients ... they call these people >RESPONDERS<

The definition of a >RESPONDER< is someone who has either undergone the traditional form of therapy like the Rebetron treatment or Interferon alone and had their viral load drop to an undetectable level or 1000 copies. There are even several people who are what they are identifying as >SPONTANEOUS RESPONDERS< which means that somehow their bodies have expelled the virus from their blood even though these are not patients who have undergone any medical therapy.

EXAMPLE: Jan, a 42 year old former IV drug user, was a woman who lived with Hepatitis C for 25 years. She was told her body couldn't tolerate the therapy because the Ribavirin and Interferon reduced her red blood count and her platelets to an unhealthy level, so she went without treatment for 5 years.

Jan was a devout born again Christian and prayed about her problem. During a healing ceremony at a her local church, the congregation prayed for her recovery and those of several other dozen parishioners with various medical conditions. Jan described the ceremony as a cleansing of her soul, by which she felt warm all over and felt a glow about her body.

A little less than a month later, Jan went for her routine 6 month blood work up. This was done to see if the disease was progressing and a way for her doctor to monitor her liver. On this visit her physician was quite baffled, he told her that there was a mistake at the lab. Her numbers had come up as undetectable or Negative to Hepatitis C. After retesting Jan's blood with another test, he could confirm that she had indeed become a >SPONTANEOUS RESPONDER<. Since that time, it has been over a year and on March 25th, Jan again tested negative for Hepatitis C and was told her ALT as well as her other liver functions were normal.

and everyone keeps asking me if I am cured. I know they love me and want me to say, "Yes," but I don't.

I tell them my viral load is undetectable now. But "undetectable" means that I could still ...
