While chatting with most general physicians about HCV, they will ask questions pertaining to how you feel physically. Discussing the symptoms that they can detect with their blood tests, ultra sounds and biopsies.
Questions like:
Where does it hurt?
What brought you here today?
Do you smoke or drink alcohol?
Does anyone in your family have, arthritis, heart problems, diabetes, gallstones, etc.?
They have a ton of queries about every physical ailment you could think of, but are they forgetting one very important one? Your Brain and your mental condition. Not just, are you depressed? Most people who are sick with a chronic illness or those who are going through combo treatment, can be a little depressed. No, they need to ask questions like... Do you have problems with your thoughts or memory? Have you ever forgot what you were talking about during the conversation? Have you ever forgotten where you put your keys, or better yet, where you parked the car? Do you have problems remembering your phone number? Did you forget what your favorite Aunt's name was? Do you call your kids by "Hey You!" because you can't remember their name either? These questions seem reasonable to ask folks that are entering the twilight of their years, chalking it up to getting old. But when you are talking about patients who are in their 20's - 30's - 40's and even 50's it just doesn't seem to fall in the category of early Alzheimer's. So these questions often do not get asked. Now, you muster up the courage to tell your Doctor about these episodes. The missing information that just flew out of your brain. The portable phone you lost for a week only to find it in the freezer! The meeting you forgot to go to because you just didn't remember where you were supposed to go! Forgetting to pay a bill because you lost the paperwork in that growing stack of news papers and old coupons. And my personal favorite... Going into a room with a purpose, only to forget what the heck you went in there for! Yes, you tell your trusted medical professional about this strange behavior and he says, "It's not related to your HCV. You need more rest." Well, unfortunately, that answer is common. But researchers across the world are finding out that these symptoms are REAL and are just as REAL as the pain in your right side, or the head aches you get. Welcome to Brain Fog! Now there are several medical terms I could type here like virally infected patients are more likely to show cognitive impairments. But to make it simple, I will tell you that the liver is a filtering unit of the body (but you knew that!) and when the filter gets mucked up with viruses and other chemicals, it doesn't work as well.
