Combo Therapy and the Side Effects

© Sharon Nicholson

I would love to say that the current medication for Hepatitis C has no side effects what so ever. But... I can't. The truth is everyone is different, so patients run the gamut of severe to mild side effects and everything in between.

Some patients sail through their treatment of interferon either with, or without ribavirin, suffering very few side effects, with their end result being a little or no detectable viral load. (Group A)

Then there are the patients (most people) who usually suffer from the first day, lasting through the first few months with the flu like symptoms. Sometimes suffering to the last day of treatment. Depending on the Genotype, treatment can last from 24 weeks to 48 weeks. Their "cure" seemingly worse than the disease. Some will end up with little or no detectable viral load, some improve their numbers slightly, then some will not improve their viral numbers at all. (Group B)

While still yet another group of patients attempt to undergo the combo therapy or even just the interferon alone, having to stop treatment altogether because the side effects are too detrimental to their health. Usually because their white blood count is too low becoming anemic or they are unable to stand the ill feelings. (Ribavirin is usually the culprit) These patients must wait for medical research to discover another form of treatment. (Group C)

Now when I say that some patients get a "flu" like symptom, some folks who have gone through this therapy laugh and say the better description is called..."HELL!!"

Below is a list of symptoms that CAN occur, BUT MAY NOT occur for everyone.

The Side Effects from A to Z :

Aches, Acid Stomach, Anemia, Appetite suppression, Appetite increase, Autoimmune Problems, Bleeding Gums, Brain Fog, Bruises, Chills, Colds, Constipation, Depression, Digestive Problems, Dizziness, Dry Mouth, Eye Problems both inside and on the lids, Ear problems (hearing), Fatigue, Fevers, Flem, Forgetfulness, Gingivitis, Gout Hair Loss, Headaches, Heart pain, Heartburn, Herpes Outbreaks (if you already have it), Infections, Insomnia, Intense Itching, Joint Pains, Leg Cramps, Lack of Libido, Chapped Lips, Liver Pains, Menstrual Irregularities (woman only), Mood Swings, Mouth Sores, Major Mucus, Muscle Aches and Pains, Nausea, Negative thoughts or behaviors, Psychosis, Rashes, Red Skin, Sensitivity to light, Shortness of breath, Sore Throat, Sweating, Thyroid problems, Tremors/Seizures (mild), Urinary Tract Infections, Excessive Urination, Or Lack of Urination, Vision Problems, Weight Loss or Weight Gain, Withdrawal, Yeast Infections

The withdrawals can be withdrawing from humanity, a form of depression. When the patient doesn't want to go outside of the home. Also the withdrawals can be physical withdrawals from the medication. Some severe but most are mild. The main complaint we see is the acheness and medicine feeling.
