Scheib ran a project last year, consisting of a group of 10-12 year olds who lacked literacy skills. These children learnt to touch-type over a five-week period. As a result, the children displayed significant improvements in their writing.
Computers are required for better presentation of writing. However, perhaps in the future, children might need those handwriting abilities to produce quick, legible and fluent writing. In my own opinion, there are two sides of the coin for every issue. In this case, the computer certainly assists with handwriting (fine movement, hand-eye co-ordination, and detailed observation) and spelling but it can also impinge on the smooth, refined flow of handwriting.
