Ted Kirkpatrick (Tourniquet) Interview

lot of world music in villages, and being in the rain forest in places like New Guinea and Malaysia and all over the Amazon hearing the repetitive sounds of jungle animals and insects and birds. It's affected how I look at music.

How did you get started in music, and what led you down the path toward heavy metal music?

My parents both had full music scholarships to the University of Wisconsin. My mom had her own all-girl big band in the 40s. I also had an uncle in the National Symphony, so I had a lot of exposure to great music growing up. I started to listen to heavy music when I was 12 or so, hearing Carl Palmer with Emerson, Lake and Palmer, and seeing Buddy Rich play from the front row ten feet away was a great experience. I started on drums, and then in high school played the baritone horn. I later picked up the guitar because it looked interesting and I thought I'd give it a try.

How do you use your website ( http://www.tourniquet.net ) to stay in touch with your fans?

The internet has been one of those almost too good to be true things. In the old days you had a mailing list where you'd copy down the addresses, spend money on stamps, have teams there folding and mailing stuff. Now you can post something and know that thousands of people are going to see it within a few days. It's one of those inventions where you can't believe how great it is. People not only in the U.S., but all over the world can get on the computer and see what's going on with the band.

Any closing comments?
