Jizzy Pearl has been a fixture on the metal scene for a long time. He was the frontman for Love/Hate, and has also been a member of L.A. Guns and Adler's Appetite. Pearl has been the lead singer for Ratt doing summer tours for the past several years. He's also appeared on many tribute CDs and has written a couple of books. His new solo album is Vegas Must Die. The album was written after Pearl moved to Vegas. He later moved back to L.A. Chad Bowar: What made you decide to leave Los Angeles and move to Las Vegas? Jizzy Pearl: I just wanted to see how the other half lived. I wanted to move somewhere else after having lived in LA for most of my adult life. At what point during your year in Vegas did you start to write the album? It came on the heels of a bad relationship ending. At the time I shut myself away for three weeks and wrote the record in that time. Describe the sound of Vegas Must Die. It's Led Zeppelin influenced. It's the old Jizzy voice that people recognize as well as some better writing and better lyrics. There are many different styles of music on the album. Was that a conscious choice, or is that just how the songs evolved? They were just sort of vomited out in a three week period, so there wasn't a lot of thought put into it. It is what it is. I think it's a caught moment in time, as opposed to a collection of songs written over an 18 month period. Vocally it seems like you were also very diverse in your styles from song to song. I don't know about diverse. It's hard to be objective about something you did. I just did the best I could and tried to stay in key. How has the early response been? It's good. I think people will like it. How did you hook up with Shrapnel Records? The songs were originally for an Adler's Appetite thing, but all of us in the band kind of screwed up that deal. Mike Varney liked the material and offered me a deal instead. You're currently on tour singing with Ratt on the Rock Never Stops tour. How is that going? It's going well. I've been doing this for a long time, living on a metal bus for months at a time. Some people go crazy, but I kind of like it. These days you're one of the few single guys on the tour. Is it hard to find partying buddies?
